Andy Warhol Up Late – Friday nights at Brisbane’s GoMA

by Paula on February 25, 2008

Love him or hate him, Andy Warhol made a huge impact on modern art and popular culture with a career spanning four decades. The best way to get your head around it is to head to the GoMA at South Brisbane and check out the amazing exhibition they have on till the 30th of March.

Okay, so maybe you’re not that into modern art but this exhibit is so much fun you can’t help but enjoy yourself. Campbell’s Soup Cans and Brillo Boxes not your thing? Maybe the gorgeous pop art portraits are more your speed. Or, have a taste of some of Andy’s saucy experimental films like Blow Job or Chelsea Girls, or various screen tests and movie programs influenced by Andy which also screen in full at the Cinémathèque (for free!).

We’ve been a few times now but my favorite was going on a Friday night to Andy Warhol Up Late. Friday nights after 5pm from now till 30th of March (excluding Good Friday), you get to see the gallery all lit up and ready to party with live music, free talks and best of all…no kids! Not that I have anything against kids, but with them not around, it’s easier to sneak down to their area (The Silver Factory) and play with all their cool stuff.

Make sure you get your photo taken in the photo booth and steal 15 seconds of fame down in the Silver Factory. Tickets are $20 (Up Late costs the same as normal Andy Warhol exhibition prices) and can be bought at Qtix or at the gallery. If you’re going with a group, book to avoid disappointment because if the band is good, it can be booked out if you show up on the night.

If you haven’t seen the spectacular Andy Warhol exhibition on at the Gallery of Modern Art at South Brisbane you’d better act fast because it closes on the 30th of March, 2008.

If only I’d known…what a great way to avoid all those noisy, disinterested school kids!!
