If You’re Looking for an Indian Restaurant in Byron Bay, go to the Tandoor Mahal at Bangalow Instead

Yes, we know we are mentioning them again…

Avoid the Byron Orion Curry House in Byron Bay – it is overpriced and very lacklustre. If you are a visitor to Byron Bay (or a local), try a 10 minute drive to Bangalow and visit the Tandoor Mahal.

We have again enjoyed a delicious meal at this Indian restaurant in Bangalow.

Tonight we tried the Chicken Kashmiri, a creamy yoghurt and coconut dish with a generous serve of chicken. We also tried the Lamb Dahiwala another yoghurt based curry with a variety of spices.

We were lucky enough to talk to the busy owners, Andrew and Marion, tonight and we found out a little secret. One of their chefs is from the award winning Harvest Cafe in Newrybar…hence why the food here is so nice.

The setting is basic and allows for outdoor and indoor dining. The service is friendly and the meals quick.

The prices are very reasonable at under $20 (most under $16), unlike the ridiculous prices seen at the Orion.

The Tandoor Mahal Indian Restaurant in Bangalow is BYO.

Don’t forget to book!

Well the food may not be bad… but the service is terrible!!. We arrived at 7:30 PM (5 of us) and had to wait until 8:10PM to have our order taken. The entre arrived at 8:45 (with the samoosas frozen in the middle) and the main meal arrived at 9:30PM, 2 hours after we were seated!! When we queried the 2-hour wait (before the arrival of the main meal) the owner marched to our table with the order details and indignantly berated us for our query saying it had only taken 1 hour and 20 minutes (8:10 to 9:30) for our meals to arrive, not 2 hours. We tried to point out the 40 minute wait to have our order taken but were curtly cut short. We became invisible in case her belligerence resulted in even more of a wait (we were starving by now and it was too late to go anywhere else). By the time the food arrived we were so hungry we wolfed it down without noticing whether it was good or not. Curt animosity from the owner as we paid the bill, and we left.

So… maybe good, maybe bad food. But I don’t have to travel 500 kilometres to be treated with curt arrogance. So one place I’ll never go again.

It is a shame that you experienced that, Keith, I shall be sure to let Marion know.

We (and other people we know) haven’t had any long wait times at all – it may have been extenuating circumstances, however, I understand your frustration.

Should you be in Bangalow again, give them a second chance. Then you’ll notice how nice the food is!
