Tandoor Mahal Indian Restaurant, Bangalow, NSW Australia.

OK, to sum it up now – must do. Fantastic Indian food in Bangalow – and about time.

The Tandoor Mahal Indian Restaurant opened in July, and it has exploded, a favourite with the locals for its authentic Indian style cuisine.

There is an excellent selection on the menu, reasonably priced from $15-$20.

We tried the Shahe kebab (Lamb) for starters. Beautiful, succulent and spicy.

For mains we tried the Butter Chicken (a classic), and the Pudina Lamb (lamb in creamy mint and coconut sauce).

Our dining partners were vegetarian, and tried the Malai Kofta (cheese and potato balls in creamy sauce) and the Vegetable Madras. Both meals were sensational.

It is a refreshing change to find a good value Indian Restaurant in the area.

One small thing – book ahead, and they close at 9pm – don’t be late!!

I tried Tandoor Mahal at Bangalow in June 2008 and it IS first class food, at a reasonable price. Hopefully it will stay that way because we plan to travel the 60km on a regular basis. A big thankyou to the owners!

Thanks Marg, I will pass on your comments next time we visit them – they’ll be thrilled.

We love this restaurant, it is our favorite Indian restaurant in the area. We are off to get take away from there now. I am a vegetarian and my partner loves chicken. my favorite is malai kofta and upon request they can even put the malai kofta sauce with fish, and i am guessing they can do this with other dishes as well. 5 star..

Well the food may not be bad… but the service is terrible!!. We arrived at 7:30 PM (5 of us) and had to wait until 8:10PM to have our order taken. The entre arrived at 8:45 (with the samoosas frozen in the middle) and the main meal arrived at 9:30PM, 2 hours after we were seated!! When we queried the 2-hour wait (before the arrival of the main meal) the owner marched to our table with the order details and indignantly berated us for our query saying it had only taken 1 hour and 20 minutes (8:10 to 9:30) for our meals to arrive, not 2 hours. We tried to point out the 40 minute wait to have our order taken but were curtly cut short. We became invisible in case her belligerence resulted in even more of a wait (we were starving by now and it was too late to go anywhere else). By the time the food arrived we were so hungry we wolfed it down without noticing whether it was good or not. Curt animosity from the owner as we paid the bill, and we left.

So… maybe good, maybe bad food. But I don’t have to travel 500 kilometres to be treated with curt arrogance. So one place I’ll never go again.

It is a shame that you experienced that, Keith, I shall be sure to let Marion know.

We (and other people we know) haven’t had any long wait times at all – it may have been extenuating circumstances, however, I understand your frustration.

Should you be in Bangalow again, give them a second chance. Then you’ll notice how nice the food is!

@Keith – we went there on Sat night, and didn’t wait for long at all – that was at 7pm. As usual, the food was just fantastic. I think a 2 hour wait you experienced was more the exception that the rule.

Well, I’ve been there twice now for exceptional food and friendly service. Just about to order takeaway and it’s only been three weeks since I discovered them. Yum!!!
