Stone’s Corner Hotel – Open Mike Comedy Night

Stone’s Corner Hotel Open Mike Comedy Night

Well, our usual dinner group was absent this week, so Shannon and I decided to head to the S’s CH OMCN instead.  We had a quick bite to eat at a nearby Thai place then made our belated appearance at the Hotel.  The show had already started without us, disappointingly.  Our companions advised us that the show had started slowly, a possible aspect of Amateur stand-up, so the MC had upped the shock factor with lots of lewd jokes and swearing.

Now I’m no prude but saying “fuck” for the sake of a laugh just doesn’t do it for me and making jokes about child sex abuse isn’t really up there with hilarious topics for me either – so the show lost points there.  We were assured the crowd wasn’t usually this large either; our group had scored a table so we were happy.  Maybe someone bought along some friends for moral support and why not, I wouldn’t be up there on stage; firstly I’m not that funny and secondly I don’t have the ticker.

As the night wore on the quality improved with a couple of performers who were in a relationship together appearing separately on stage and taking the piss out of each other.  OJ was the only woman I saw that night and she was quite good.  Nice delivery and stage presence (what do I know, I’m not a professional).

The highlight would have to be the last performer, not a clue what his name was, but he played the guitar and sang songs about a number of topics – including his two passions: Scottish gansta rap and skin cancer awareness!!!  He shouldn’t have been on stage here, he should be in the Melbourne comedy festival, he should be touring with Arj Barker.  Tears were running down our collective faces.  A supportive audience in attendance it seemed.

I love a good laugh and really enjoy going to see comedy shows, if you are unsure an Open Mike night is a good way to support up and coming comedians and for sure you’ll get at least one laugh, be it with or at a performer…

Comedy night sounds like a great idea. Can we do this as an option to dinner? What does everyone else think?
